چکیده

The vertex cover problem is a classic NP-complete problem for which the best worst-case approximation ratio is roughly 2. In this paper, we use a collection of simple reductions, each of which guarantees an approximation ratio of 3 2 , to find approximate vertex covers for a large collection of test graphs from various sources. We explain these reductions and explore the interaction between them. These reductions are extremely fast and even though they, by themselves are not guaranteed to find a vertex cover, we manage to find a 3/2-approximate vertex cover for every single graph in our large collection of test examples.

Structure Approximation of Most Probable Explanations in Bayesian Networks

Abstract Typically, when one discusses approximation algorithms for (NP-hard) problems (like TRAVELING SALESPERSON, VERTEX COVER, KNAPSACK), one refers to algorithms that return a solution whose value is (at least ideally) close to optimal; e.g., a tour with almost minimal length, a vertex cover of size just above minimal, or collection of objects that has close to maximal value. In contrast, o...

Bounding cochordal cover number of graphs via vertex stretching

It is shown that when a special vertex stretching is applied to a graph, the cochordal cover number of the graph increases exactly by one, as it happens to its induced matching number and (Castelnuovo-Mumford) regularity. As a consequence, it is shown that the induced matching number and cochordal cover number of a special vertex stretching of a graph G are equal provided G is well-covered bipa...

New lower bounds for Approximation Algorithms in the Lovász-Schrijver Hierarchy

Determining how well we can efficiently compute approximate solutions to NPhard problems is of great theoretical and practical interest. Typically the famous PCP theorem is used for showing that a problem has no algorithms computing good approximations. Unfortunately, for many problem this approach has failed. Nevertheless, for such problems, we may instead be able to show that a large subclass...

Vertex Cover Approximations on Random Graphs

The vertex cover problem is a classical NP-complete problem for which the best worst-case approximation ratio is 2 − o(1). These reductions are extremely fast and even though they, by t...

Approximation Algorithms to Minimum Vertex Cover Problems on Polygons and Terrains

We propose an anytime algorithm to compute successively better approximations of the optimum of Minimum Vertex Guard. Though the presentation is focused on polygons, the work may be directly extended to terrains along the lines of [4]. A major idea in our approach is to explore dominance of visibility regions to first detect pieces that are more difficult to guard.
